Mary Makes It Work

Practical creativity & modest joy after 60

Well, Here We Are.

I have a website.

This feels slightly more official than I intended.

Mary Makes It Work started as a YouTube channel, but somewhere along the way it became a little bigger and considerably stranger than that.

I live alone … sort of. There are dogs, a cat, an animated woman named Fab, a sunflower with theatrical ambitions, and an entire imaginary world that has apparently decided to move into my computer.

Meanwhile, the actual me is still sitting at this desk trying to figure out ordinary things.

How much money do I really need?

What is worth spending money on?

How do I make a good life when time, money and energy are not unlimited?

How do I keep creating things without letting the grass reach shoulder height?

And, increasingly, what do I want the next part of my life to look like?

That is what this blog is for.

Some things make more sense written down than they do in a video. Sometimes I want to work through an idea. Sometimes I find something useful. Sometimes I make something ridiculous and feel that other people should have to look at it too.

There will probably be practical things here about money, work, living alone and making do.

There will also be creative projects, experiments, animation, things I am learning, things that did not work, and occasional evidence that I have disappeared much too far into my own imaginary universe.

I am not particularly interested in pretending that ordinary life is endlessly exciting.

Most of it isn’t.

But ordinary does not have to mean empty.

A modest life can still be funny, creative, useful, beautiful and occasionally very strange.

So that is the plan.

No grand reinvention.

No twelve-step transformation.

Just figuring out how to make something good out of the life, time, money and circumstances I actually have.

And apparently writing about it now too.

Welcome to Mary Makes It Work.
